I am Satyam Veeratterapillay. I am a ST7 in general paediatrics and currently doing a special interest module in paediatric cardiology at the Freeman Hospital.
Throughout my training, I had not been exposed to the variety of paediatric cardiology patients, from babies being born with complex congenital heart disease requiring surgery and long hospital stays, cardiomyopathies requiring heart failure management, transplant patients and their associated health needs, to serious life threatening arrhythmias.
Being interested in neonatal and paediatric intensive care, I also felt that learning how to perform and interpret an echocardiogram was extremely important in the management of these sick patients. Finally, I could see how worried patients would be when a murmur was picked up in their child and how stressful it would be for them waiting for an appointment far away and I thought being a PECSIG would help patient care within the region.
The last year that I have been at the Freeman Hospital has been an enriching experience. The team is very supportive and I have become a lot more confident in managing paediatric cardiac patients. I feel ready to set up a PECSIG service in the region when I complete my training in the next couple of years.
